Empty Shelf Book #6: Urban Impact

This is the sixth book I’ve read for the #EmptyShelf Challenge. (Read here to join us on this fun challenge!)

Below is the format I plan to do this year for each book I read.

urbanimpactcoverTitle: Following Jesus: Urban Impact

Author: John L. Thompson

What’s it about: The book breaks down urban ministry and how to have a lasting impact serving in this area..

Why did I read it: First, I sat in a workshop presented by John Thompson a few years back. I was really impressed by his knowledge of and passion for urban ministry. Second, I too have a passion for urban youth ministry so it was the right book to read.

Favorite idea: I loved his approach to mentorship and discipleship. When he first begins working with someone he is very intentional (you can call it strict) about having them understand how important this commitment is to him and should be to the individual. So much so that he puts a time limit for the initial period. It can be 6, 9 or even 12 months. But there is a definite goal and an end. Anything after that builds on that foundation.
